Zojoji was founded by Yuyo Sosho, an eighth-generation Pure Land priest, in 1393. The temple's history goes back some 600+ years. In the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu was deeply devoted to this temple, and it became the family temple of the Tokugawa clan, prospering under the protection of the shogunate.
