Asakusa Nakamise-dori
The Nakamise, stores that are operating in the area around the shrine and temple. It is one of the oldest shopping malls in Japan. Nakamise started in Asakusa originally when Sensoji temple gave the privilege of opening stores close by to people who were imposed as corvee at Sensoji in the Edo era. Corvee is a term that refers to a person who pays a tax to the local temple by working in or for that temple.
On Nakamise street from Kaminarimon (the gate) to Hondo (the main hall), there are many stores offering souvenirs, fresh baked rice crackers, doll shape buns and deep fried buns with filling, etc. You can enjoy seeing them as well as eating them.
