Ever since the prohibition of hunting and deforestation in 841, the laurel forest maintains its primitive state under the protection as a sanctuary of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It has been appointed as a natural monument and is also deemed a World Heritage site along with the Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
